By Patrick J. Sayne, Ed.D.
When I first volunteered with the Red Cross in response to Hurricane Katrina, I, like most Americans, had only the vaguest idea about the Red Cross as an organization. I knew that it taught swimming and first aid and responded to disasters and that’s where my knowledge stopped. In the succeeding years while taking the classes to qualify as a Disaster Action Team member, I learned a great deal more. What I learned impressed me and when I had the opportunity to join the Chapter Board, I eagerly accepted. I was retiring as the Superintendent of the Paso Robles School District and becoming a Red Cross Board Member was a meaningful way to continue to serve the community.
Upon joining the Board one of first things I noted was the dedication and quality of the other Board members and staff of our local chapter. Some of our Board members have been working with the Red Cross since before I was born. I really felt like a rookie! It certainly was a learning experience. For example, I had no idea that local chapters were 100% responsible for raising funds for local needs. I thought the National American Red Cross gave financial support to local chapters—and although they would provide us with considerable resources in the event of a large-scale disaster, they do not fund the day-to-day services the Chapter provides to our county.  A major task for Board members is to secure the funds necessary for the chapter to continue to operate.
I am greatly honored to have been asked to serve as the Chair for this year. Following Jay Jamison’s two highly successful years, I know I have big shoes to fill. Working together with fellow board members—including our five new members—and the staff and volunteers, I know we will have a great year. In advance, thanks for your help and support.
